When a Mag reaches its maximum Level, it won't eat anything anymore. Each item will increase or decrease the growth EXP gauge of a Mag's specific stat(s) when a gauge is filled up, that stat is increased and the Mag's Level is increased by 1. Mags grow when players feed them items, and they will eat almost anything even Furniture items. Conversely, Mags won't eat anything when they're at 67% Energy or above.

Mags recover exactly 33% energy when they're fed. All Mag actions (except for their Photon Blast) require the Mag to have Energy left to be used. Energy ranges from 0% (empty) to 99% (full), and decreases when a Mag uses its action or overtime, even when the Mag's owner isn't undertaking a Quest (which means feeding a Level-capped Mag while a player is not planning on Questing for a while is pretty much wasting items). However, for all their utility values, Mags come with a 'maintenance' mechanic through the Energy stat. In addition, Mags can assist their owners through various methods, such as attacking alongside them, buffing their offensive power or even producing healing items for them to use. Mags also have the ability to 'charge up' when their owner inflicts damage this charge can eventually be released through a special action known as Photon Blast.

These stat bonuses also count toward the requirements for that character to equip gears and learn Photon Arts, which makes Mag stat distribution crucial to a character's overall growth.

When fed items, the stats of a Mag will increase, contributing bonuses to that character's stats. Only one Mag can be assigned to a character at a time.
